Estimated Safe-to-Spend Calculator
Estimate a conservative monthly range for flexible spending after the obligations, goals, retirement priority, and buffers you enter.
This standalone educational calculator does not use Expense Atlas account data and is not the calculation used to generate a Personalized Budget in the app. The authenticated budget uses different inputs and planning logic. This result is not permission to spend.

How the estimate works
- The calculator subtracts every listed obligation, reserve, goal, retirement priority, and optional buffer from take-home income.
- The central estimate then retains the greater of 7%–12% of income (adjusted by household size) or 10% of required living expenses.
- The low estimate keeps 150% of that caution reserve; the high estimate keeps 50%. All three results stop at $0.
Assumptions and limits
- Income and expenses are monthly and reasonably representative.
- Annual or irregular costs have been divided into a realistic monthly reserve.
- Missing, non-numeric, or negative amounts use $0; household size uses 1.
- The estimate does not predict emergencies, changing income, taxes, returns, or every household-specific obligation.
- The authenticated Personalized Budget uses different inputs and planning logic. This simplified result should not be treated as the app's budget output.
